You’ve booked the photographer, picked the location, you’ve even created a Pinterest mood board to help come up with your vision. But one of the most important details is the attire. But what do you wear to a photoshoot? Let’s talk about some tips to ensure that you look killer and you get some incredible photos.

Compliment not clash

We’ve all seen the family photos where the entire family is wearing a white shirt with blue jeans but one person is wearing bright orange. While this definitely adds character, it provides the opposite effect that you are hoping for. It’s distracting which ultimately takes away from the true focus of the photo. So how do you avoid this? First and foremost you need to pick a color scheme! I like to think about paint swatches you can get at Home Depot. It has multiple colors that all go together, that are in the same color family but each color is still different.

You can also consider color theory, to find complementary colors. But the most important thing to remember is that you should not strive to match exactly with everyone else and you should definitely not strive to clash but your goal should be to compliment your partner and the location that you are going to be in.

Neutral is always best

But how do you achieve complementary outfits without matching? Neutral colors are your best friend! You can easily get away with a dark navy blue shirt and a cream sweater but matching bright pink with something may be a little harder. Whenever a client asks for my suggestions on a color scheme, I always say neutral colors and earthy tones. AKA Neons, pastels, and tie-dye should probably not be on your list of options.

You should ALWAYS be the star

When you pay for a photoshoot, YOU should be the star of your photos. Your love should shine through and the only way it’s going to do that is if you let it! When you look at a photo, the first thing you notice should not be what the person was wearing or the crazy pattern on their shirt. You should notice the obvious affection and love the people in the image share. Or if it’s just you strutting your stuff, people should be able to see that wonderful confidence! Your clothes should just be an accessory to your beauty, they should help to enhance the photos not distract from the purpose of the photos.

So what are some practical suggestions on what to wear to a photoshoot?

Guys

  • Nice pants (jeans or slacks)
  • Button up shirt (short sleeve or long but long is preferable)
  • No crazy patterns
  • If you are going for a more casual look: nice sneakers (leave the running shoes at home
  • If fancier: nice dress shoes
  • Jean Jacket or Leather Jacket always look great
  • A Suit, if you are going for a fancier look

Girls

  • Flowy dress
  • Jeans or a Cute Skirt
  • Cute Blouse or Sweater
  • Heals, Combat boots, nice sneakers, ankle boots

Be You!

Remember at the end of the day, you should always be you and be comfortable! So if wearing a fancy dress would make you super uncomfortable, go for a more casual vibe. These photos are supposed to capture you and your love, so you should wear whatever will make you feel confident, happy and ready for an epic adventure!
